This summer, it's time to PLAY
The next Invisible Thread zine explores the possibilities (and pain) that come with one of humans' most primal behaviors.
I am excited to announce that play is the theme of the summer issue of The Invisible Thread zine!
I’m in the middle of putting together the physical zine, which I will scan, print, and then mail to paid subscribers. This hands-on process involves scissors, a printer, lots of tape, glue, and, apparently, googly eyes. And it’s one of my favorite things I do all year!
I picked this theme because — like all the others: birthdays, fabric, roots, gifts, space, layers — play is a universal concept that shows up differently in each of our lives.
That’s the idea behind this newsletter: that we are all connected by certain aspects of being human. It’s simple and yet so fun to explore the complexities within.
Play is at the heart of every one of these zines.
Experts say that we play in order to learn new skills, connect with others, and explore uncertainty. You can get hurt playing, so it’s not necessarily a subject that is only happy and carefree, but it is rich for the kinds of stories I love to tell.
The great Fred Rogers said that play is the work of childhood. He also said that play is how children express their truths.
Making these print zines is one of the most playful projects in my creative world. It prompts me to interact with the stories inside them and the bigger ideas around them, and then I get to share that little art project with YOU.
That’s no small feat in a world with AI creeping into every sphere of life.
